The Appalachian Voice

Layout & Editorial Design

For over two years, I spearheaded the layout and graphic design of every issue of The Appalachian Voice, a 24-page bi-monthly magazine covering environmental and social issues across the Appalachian region—from coal and water quality to land use, energy policy, and sustainable development. Each issue distributed more than 76,000 free copies across eight states.

Layout was the real puzzle. Each issue came in as a mix of feature stories, sidebars, photos, and infographics, and I had two weeks to pull it all together across 24 pages. Alongside two editors, I shaped the creative direction, decided where images needed room to breathe, and figured out how to make dense stories feel engaging.

14 issues. 14 different subjects.
